St Thomas’ CE Primary School opened in 1865 to provide education for the children that resided in the Skirbeck Quarter. The School, to this day, still retains its strong links with the Church although its status is now only Voluntary Controlled. The school used to occupy a site closer to the church where the junction of London Road entered the town via the High Street, what are now the flats and other dwellings in Middlecott Close. The school moved to the present location early in 1971 where it has continued to thrive and grow.
The school, like a growing organism, has constantly responded to increased pupil numbers and has added additional accommodation at regular intervals. The school is now two-form entry with 14 classrooms and a Hearing Impaired Unit. The school also has its own Sports Hall. The buildings are well maintained and the school is well resourced which assists its active and dynamic profile within the community it has served for over a hundred years.
